Toes

I know this is a random post and I promise I will have a wedding post up soon, but this one came to me in the shower and I just wanted to know does anyone else have really crazy toenails?  Let me preface this with the fact that I found out my toenails were different when I was in high school.  By that time I was obsessed with running but I had yet to learn to buy shoes a half size bigger because your feet expand while running.  Hence my toenails took a turn for the worse and were just gross for a lack of better words.  I never really minded and just kept them covered with toenail polish for the rest of high school and through college.  Right before my senior year I decided to check out my toenails since I knew the days of good insurance were about to be gone:)  My doctor described lamisil.  You know you have seen the commercials…but here is a reminder:

Little did I know that this drug also requires your liver to be tested every month due to how strong the medication was.  Yeah I wasn’t to pleased about this and the medicine only achieved me having a lot of stomach problems.  Anyways I kind of forgot about it and put it to the side until I started training for marathons oh and Dave made me use my own toenail clippers:)  Yeah they were that bad.  I made another appointment after my second marathon and the podiatrist said that my toenails were bad but not fatal.  He said if it didn’t bother me to not worry but that I had one of three options: 1 remove all my toenails, 2 have a laser go over them with not a very high success rate, or 3 just live with it.  Yeah you can guess 1 and 2 weren’t looking so hot so I chose option 3.  Cue 3 years later.  You ask why are you telling us this because my last marathon took a beating on my toenails….so my question is does anyone else have this problem and if so any suggestions for me?  Right now I guess I will just continue going on with life and running because I figure this if this is a problem I have life is pretty good:)

I attempted to make this tonight:  Honey Apple Challah Bread.  Ambitious yes but I thought I could take on the challenge.  I had to stay home today due to my voice still being gone.  I did venture to school this morning to get everything ready for my sub but after resting, doing school work, and grad school work I decided bread it was.  I set it to rise and came back an hour later….it did not double in size.  Smitten Kitchen oh where did I go wrong.  Our bread is now in the compost bin…sigh on to make pasta with eggplant puree.  At least I know I can make this:)

A nice surprise

This weekend has been pretty amazing aside from the fact that I had a visit from Mr. Laryngitis…yes my sweet husband made that one up.  After an awesome run on Sunday in the drizzling rain I started to feel a bit run down.  Slowly a sinus infection started working it’s way into my system and the fact that I work in a school.  While I love my kids I don’t love the illnesses they bring with them.  By the end of school Thursday I literally had no voice.  This happens to me every year since I have been in college.  If you know me at all you know I love to talk..which is why teaching is great for me but getting sick is not.  Thank the Lord I had Friday off already because I hate taking days off.  True fact I mean I went to school the day after the marathon…probably not a good idea but oh well:)  Anyways I woke up Friday morning feeling great with no voice.  I ended up resting and cleaning in the morning while the chimney cleaner checked our chimney.  I was pretty excited because Dave and I love fireplaces and since it’s pretty damp here I feel like I can start fires after the first rain which was two weeks ago.  The chimney inspection came out great.  I went for a great 8 mile run after and then rested.  My sweet husband came home on Friday and brought me lunch and finished working from home.  Our house was clean and later that night our good friend Jon Brinks came into town.  He’s pretty great and is on his way to Japan and China.  We are really jealous as we did this trip two years ago and can’t wait to go back.  He changed his reservation to have a layover here because he loves it here.  He was our first visitor last year.

This is us wine tasting last year.  He got in at 10 and then we stayed up way too late.  Of course I talked way too much but such is life.  We love when Jon a.k.a comes because he is a foodie like us so he’s always up for great restaurants.  We got up early for brunch at Tasty n Sons.  First off this place is amazing.  They are owned by the owners of Torro Bravo an awesome tapas place that we went to for Dave’s birthday last year.  We went to Tasty n Sons this summer with my brother for Happy Hour and it was awesome.  They have small plates like tapas and big plates but we had not been for brunch.  Let me just say it was worth the 45 minute wait but then most brunch places in Portland are:)  We started off with Stumptown coffee while we waited.  Then Dave and Jon had Bacon covered dates.  Jon and I both got the Chocolate Potato Doughnut with crème anglaise which was amazing.  Then the three of us shared small plate of their special which was a mini biscuit with gravy.  Amazing.  Then I had Cast Iron Frittata with grilled corn, gypsy peppers, caramelized onions, feta, Dave had Moroccan Chicken Hash with harissa cream & over easy egg and Jon had Burmese Red Pork Stew with short grain rice & eggs two ways.  It was amazing.  It sounds like a lot of food but it’s more of a tapas style restaurant.  It was amazing.  We then dropped Jon off for his flight to Japan and Dave and I drove home.  The sun finally peaked out which was awesome.  I stayed in and did schoolwork all day including finding 15 articles for my grad class.  I was able to work out later and now Dave and I are enjoying a fire and wine:)  I still can’t talk which is killing me but overall I feel good and am enjoying an awesome relaxing night.  Thanks Jon for visiting us we loved it even if it was short.  We are off to make dinner and hopefully search online for some furniture ideas….we have no furniture for our upstairs and our lawn chairs are ready to go back in the garage:)  Any ideas?  Our friend Ciara was living there until a week ago but now she is gone so we need to furnish it:)  Suggestions are greatly welcome:)

Happy Weekend!

Portland Marathon

As I am sitting here in my warm bed working on school work for my grad class and school work for my classes to teach tomorrow it is hard to believe that I ran a marathon this morning.  Yep I ran my fourth marathon today.  I am sure you are all dying to know if I am sick of them yet or if I am still going to run another one.  Well don’t worry today further solidified how I can’t wait to run another one:)  I know I am sick but I had the best run ever today so I can’t wait to do it again.  I have been training for this marathon since this summer although if you know me you know that I am an avid runner and had a great base so I didn’t start doing official long runs until August.  I wasn’t sure how this one was going to go especially after the exhaustion I felt from my whirlwind wedding weekend that included a half marathon….but that weekend was so worth it.  Also this is the first marathon I have done as a full fledged vegetarian.  Best decision ever for me at least.  Anyways I tapered this week and yesterday Dave went on a two mile run with me:)  We also weather proofed our house.  We put up all of our screens and storm windows and painted our back deck with weather sealant.  Seems like not a lot but those windows were a beast.  So glad they are up and that yesterday was nice because it’s raining today:)  Anyways I made an awesome veggie pasta and salad last night in preparation for today.  I got up at 5, ate a cliff bar, drank a ton of water, and then Dave graciously drove me downtown.  I know he is the best.  I was in corral A which was awesome.  My goal was to break 3:20 so being logical I lined up with the 3:10 pace group. I have tried this before and it didn’t quite work for me but I went for it.  The race was awesome.  I have never ran a marathon in my city and it was great to be familiar with the sites.  A couple of tough hills but I am pretty used to them now.  I saw Dave at mile 20 which was awesome and it was right by my high school.  I stuck with the 3:10 pace group until about 22 miles and then slowed down a bit.  I also stopped for a 50 second bathroom break.  I won’t go into details but let’s just say that I used bushes over a porta potty since none were near and it definitely saved time:)  I had a terrible cramp in mile 24 but it went away and I sucked it up for the last mile.  Official time: 3:13:56.  I am beyond happy with that as it was a 6 minute P.R. for me.  I am pretty sore now and smelled so bad that Dave had to roll the windows down and put heat on:)  Best part of the race by far was seeing Dave at the finish line and then hugging him.  Something about him watching the races and being my biggest fan is pretty amazing.  The Portland marathon overall was amazing.  I have run Boston and Chicago which are incredibly well run and this ranks up there with them.  Also I got a shirt for running, a finisher shirt, a tree to plant, and a rose.  Portland rocks.  I will leave you with a picture that Dave took of me while I am going to go and walk to the bathroom a task that will take me quite a bit due to how sore I am:)

Me with my running swag – the tree to plant and my rose:)

Blessed

I started today feeling caught up and ready for my classes.  By the end of the day I was struggling to find papers and my classroom was a mess:)  Pretty typical but what made it worse was the work I had due for my masters class.  I am on my last class and then I just have to do my capstone and then I am done.  I need to finish by the end of November otherwise I have to pay for another semester.  This should be doable but today I felt the crunch.  I worked on the power point all weekend but needed to add more information.  I have a meeting tomorrow night with my capstone adviser so I just wanted to be done with the power point.  I had a minor freak out with my sweet husband.  You know what he did?  Made an awesome dinner of soy chicken nugget tacos and who took out the garbage in the rain.  Tonight I was reminded again how blessed I am with my husband.  Not to brag but he is amazing and pretty good looking too:)

Happy Hump day in 3 and a half hours on the West Coast:)
